Luciano Becchio celebrates his match winning goal | Chris Brunskill

Leeds United made it two wins on the spin against sides from the top three of the Championship with a hard fought win over Leicester City. Luciano Becchio’s early penalty was enough to separate the two sides, end United’s miserable run of midweek form and pay fitting tribute to Gary Speed on the anniversary of his tragic death.

Leeds named an unchanged line up for the visit of Nigel Pearson’s Foxes retaining the forward partnership of El-Hadji Diouf and Luciano Becchio. The only change in the 18 was the introduction of Adam Drury to the subs bench instead of Dom Poleon, the youngster apparently being punished further for his defensive mistake on Saturday.

Leicester City featured former Whites keeper Kasper Schmeichel in goal as they looked to maintain their superb record at Elland Road whilst staying in touch at the top of the Championship.

The home side made a blistering start, going a goal up inside three minutes. Sam Byram, so impressive defensively on Saturday showed his attacking prowess by running at his opposite full back, the wonderfully named Jeff Schlupp, forcing the Leicester defender to bring him down, earning United a spot kick. Becchio stepped up to coolly slot the ball home, sending Schmeichel the wrong way.

With another moving 11 minute chant for Gary Speed from the 11th minute onwards taking place, Leeds looked lively going forward, Jerome Thomas once again a great outlet causing Leicester full back Richie De Laet all sorts of problem.

The visitors made sporadic forays into the Leeds half, De Laet firing a shot at Kenny, but it was United who looked more likely to add a second goal. A lovely flowing move saw Becchio away down the left hand side, the striker flighting in a delightful cross which was met sweetly by the onrushing Paul Green. The midfielders shot was superbly turned over the bar by Schmeichel who was slightly fortunate that the ball was straight at him.

There were no changes at the break, but Leicester started much the stronger with Waghorn having an effort blocked by Lee Peltier. The skipper looked particularly fired up against his old club, producing by far his best performance as a Leeds player.

A double substitution by Leicester saw striker Mark Futacs and Anthony Knockaert introduced. Within minutes Knockaert hit a long range effort which saw Paddy Kenny forced to push away at full stretch. At the other end Thomas continued to be a thorn in the side of the Leicester defence but appeared to pick up an injury around the hour mark. Whilst he was struggling, the Foxes mounted a huge amount of pressure on the Leeds goal, as the home defence struggled to clear the ball.

Although he appeared to have recovered, Thomas was withdrawn with Michael Brown entering the fray to solidify the middle of the Leeds midfield, with Michael Tonge moving on to the left hand side. The Whites instantly looked a lot more solid in the middle of the park, with Norris in particular producing a tigerish display. Leicester resorted to a host of long balls which were meat and drink to the outstanding central defensive pairing of Tom Lees and Alan Tate,

It was hard to believe but Leeds actually looked the more attractive side, looking like causing danger whenever they could gain controlled possession of the ball. They could quite easily of doubled their lead when Becchio was played through and rounded Schmeichel to tuck the ball away, but the Argentinean was dubiously given offside.

Four minutes stoppage time were added and there was a late scare to come as a Schmeichel through ball was deemed to have been tipped over the bar by Kenny, but the corner was seen off and the final whistle blew immediately to end the game and add three more precious points to the Leeds tally.

So after looking to be in a relegation scrap just a week ago, Leeds can now look upwards once more to the playoff places, the gap now just six points. The Whites now face two away trips with a visit to Huddersfield first on the agenda on Saturday lunchtime. A win there, to silence the upstarts down the road would cap a perfect week for Leeds United supporters.

Through It All Together gathers the thoughts of both managers ahead of tonight's midweek clash.

After the whites' impressive 2-1 win at the weekend, taking Crystal Palace's 14 match unbeaten run, Leicester travel to Elland Road tonight. The Foxes are unbeaten in 4 league games.

Below are the thoughts of both managers ahead of tonight's Championship game:

The new feeling of optimism surrounding Elland Road will face a stiff test on Tuesday with the visit of Leicester City. Midweek games have been a problem for the Whites against any opposition in recent times, and the Foxes themselves have become a bit of a bogey team. Recent meetings between the two sides at Elland Road have seen a bit of a pattern emerge and don’t bode well for Neil Warnock’s men. If ever there was a game to have a wager on the correct score based on past history, this may be the one.

28th April 2012 – LEEDS UNITED 1 LEICESTER CITY 2

The last day of the most miserable season in recent memory (and that includes two relegations!) saw Leeds fall to a typical defeat. The football was as unmemorable as most of the games at Elland Road under Neil Warnock at the tail end of the last campaign. Leicester took the lead six minutes as two of the crowd’s scapegoats combined to concede a comically bad goal. Michael Brown miscued a ball in midfield, skying the ball backwards towards his own goal, a mistake made worse by the hapless Danny Pugh failing to deal with the dropping ball, allowing Martin Waghorn to nip in and fire past Andy Lonergan. The match saw Jermaine Beckford make his first return to Elland Road since scoring the goal that took Leeds back into the Championship, and his reception was better than anything that the current team received. He repaid the fans adulation with the Leeds salute and a complete failure to attempt to cause Leeds any problems. He was removed by an un-amused Nigel Pearson at the break.

Leeds huffed and puffed their way back into the game, with Danny Webber grabbing an equaliser with eight minutes to go, the only goal of his disappointing spell at the club. However as so often that season, Leeds shot themselves in the foot, allowing Harry Panayiotou to tap in a winner four minutes into stoppage time, ensuring the season ended on a suitably downbeat note.

19th October 2010 – LEEDS UNITED 1 LEICESTER CITY 2

Sven-Goran Eriksson’s side came to Elland Road struggling at the wrong end of the table. The former England manager had assembled a useful looking outfit that were among the favourites to win promotion to the Premier League under Paolo Sousa. However after slipping into the bottom three, Sousa was fired and Eriksson handed the reins. The poor form under the Portuguese manager was a mystery as they proceeded to play Leeds of the park, earning the Swede his first win as Leicester boss. The only surprise was that it took 63 minutes for them to take the lead, Kyle Naughton eventually putting the visitors in front, his deflected effort looping over the keeper. Steven Howard doubled the lead nine minutes from time, before Luciano Becchio pulled one back, heading home a Max Gradel cross.

Leeds bowed out of the League Cup in disappointing fashion, as they squandered a lead in the last 25 minutes. Coming just three days after the first win of the campaign over Millwall, hopes were high that the Whites could maintain their form after an impressive display against the Lions. The hero of the victory on Saturday was Davide Somma and the South African striker followed up his double with the opening goal of the tie on the half hour, heading home a Max Gradel cross. However with 25 minutes left Richie Wellens fired the Foxes level and they pinched the tie two minutes from time as Neill Collins handled inside the box, Steve Howard tucking away the spot kick.

A pitiful defeat six days earlier at MK Dons had seen Gary McAllister sacked by Ken Bates and the Boxing Day clash with runaway league leaders Leicester City saw Simon Grayson take the reins of Leeds United for the first time. A legend as a player for the Foxes, there was no case of mixed loyalties for the new manager, as he started his tenure with a gritty point.

Defensive frailties had been the Achilles heel for McAllister’s side and they surfaced again for Leicester’s opener, Matty Fryat given far too much time and space to fire the visitors ahead. The Whites though were roared on by a crowd of over 33,000 and as the game entered stoppage time got their reward. Robert Snodgrass had started the game on the bench, but finished it with the equalising goal, tapping in from close range.

John Carver took control of the team for the last time at Elland Road as Leeds continued their slide into the abyss of relegation to League One. A 4-0 defeat in their previous game to Stoke City saw the Leeds fans disgruntled (including this one who left the ground after Stoke’s third goal on the hour, the only time I have ever left a game so early!) and a pitiful turn out of under 17K saw Leeds capitulate to another defeat. Danny Tiatto put the Foxes ahead after 21 minutes and when Matthew Kilgallon was sent off early in the second half, the writing was on the wall. Leeds knew it was going to be one of those nights when a Robbie Blake header which appeared to have crossed the line was not given, and just seconds later Leicester swept to the other end to make it 2-0 through Ian Hume. A late Paul Butler header was scant consolation and a 5-1 defeat at Luton in the following game brought Carver’s short reign to a painful end.

George Dempsey will look to continue his hot form with his tips as we face a difficult Leicester City side.

Leicester City are firm and rightful favourites at a price of 13/10 (2.30) with Coral, whilst Leeds United are outsiders at 12/5 (3.40) with SpreadEx. The draw is priced at 11/4 (3.74) with Pinnacle.

There’s no doubt in my mind as a punter, if you’re looking at this from a betting point of view, you’d be silly to bet Leeds given that a Tuesday night win for us in the League has now been absence since August of last year.

The last time Leeds United won on a Tuesday, Robert Snodgrass and Ramon Nunez were on the score sheet. I don’t look at this game and base it on overall recent form, because we’ve shown we can easily see off the top sides after the weekend.

However, it’s a stand out trend and as stupid as it is – it’s now long standing and although it’s bound to go out the window at some time, and probably in dramatic fashion against a top side, it’s still something worth considering.

Leicester are third in the table and have been in consistently good form all season – but so were Palace.

Despite that good form, however, the Foxes have only won three of their nine away games this season. Five of those games have seen 2-1 score lines, and in that instance Leicester have lost out on four occasions.

In their two wins and two draws, there has been two or less goals. That puts the goals total completely in the balance after it took all of 85 minutes to get the 3rd on Saturday, after the score was 0-0 at half time, and considering Leeds United games have generally gone under lately.

The over 2.5 goals market is priced at 10/11 (1.94) with Marathon and the under 2.5 goals market is a similarly priced 21/20 (2.05) with BetVictor.

I personally won’t be touching that market – but if you like a goal bet then my personal lean would be towards their being 4 or more goals. We looked a completely different side on the weekend with the new owners and Leicester are easily capable of 2 goals.

It’s a hard game to look at and when you’re being asked to pick multiple bets for the same team every week of the season it’s simply not possible. Some games you look at, and there’s nothing there. For me that’s probably this game.

Leicester are a possibility and will be on everyone’s coupons I assure you, 50/50 shot there given their away form. Goals are a possibility, 50/50 shot there. The one single tip I’ve picked out is on the back of the history of the fixture and stand out stat in Leeds United home games this year.

Leicester and Leeds has always been something of an intense game. Going back years it was, and going back to Leicester’s League One promotion season it was. It still is now. Leicester quite simply have a knack of winning at Elland Road.

In our last five Championship meetings there have been seven goals in the 70th minute or later. At Elland Road this season, in nine league games, there have been an incredible 12 goals in the last 15 minutes of games. I’m only taking one bet in this game and it’s pretty stand out.

Tips:

A goal to be score in the 75th minute or later: Yes @ 1.95 with William Hill

That’s my more confident pick. As a result of Saturdays corner winner, I think it pays to have a go at that market again, given we’ve got a home side with a new confidence (I think) and a good, 3rd place side. Both will attack and given Leeds’ resilience on Saturday, I can see Leicester at least forcing a lot of corners here, and if Leeds chip in 3-5 that’d certainly help.

12 or more corners @ 1.83 with Bet365

Match Preview ahead of Leeds United's game with Leicester City at Elland Road on Tuesday night.

It's back to Elland Road on Tuesday night for Leeds United's second home game in a matter of days. The Whites recorded a much needed win against the division's in form team Crystal Palace at the weekend but it doesn't get any easier as Leicester are the next visitors to West Yorkshire. Nigel Pearson's side sit third in the table and they are what stands between Neil Warnock and back to victories for the first time since September.

Team News:

Neil Warnock is likely to name an unchanged side for the visit of Leicester. Speaking to the club's official website, Warnock said:

"Have we got reason to change? If you don't have a reason, you don't change things so we'll see. I couldn't tell you the last time we fielded an unchanged side.

It is a big week in terms of games so I'll speak to some of the lads. Three games in a week is a lot for some of them, players like Dioufy, so we'll have a chat and weigh things up.

I'm not too concerned about the loan lads we've brought in having a lack of games. Alan Tate is a player who plays within himself and he will be fine. Jerome is slightly different being a winger, but we'll see."

Leicester could too be unchanged for the match. David Nugent missed the game with Sheffield Wednesday at the weekend and is likely to miss out again with a neck problem. Sean St Ledger is also out with a hamstring injury but Paul Konchesky is once again available after recovering from the same injury.

One To Watch:

Leicester have scored eight goals without reply in their last two league games and someone who has been instrumental in making that happen is Lloyd Dyer. The winger finished the 6-0 win over Ipswich with a goal and two assists to his name and the 30 year old has 3 goals to his name in total so far this campaign. Dyer is a fans favourite at Leicester and joined the club after helping MK Dons to the double under Paul Ince in 2008 and has also had spells at West Brom, Kidderminster, Coventry, QPR and Millwall.

My Predicted United Line-up:

I fully expect Neil Warnock to name an unchanged side and why not? It was a good team performance at the weekend. Same again please.

My Prediction:

It doesn't get any easier for Leeds after beating top of the table Crystal Palace, next up is third placed Leicester. If United play like they did on Saturday with the same level of effort and desire then I don't see why we can't be celebrating another victory. Yes I know it's a Tuesday night game but I think we'll win.
