Leeds United are working on a deal for Bayern Munich midfielder Marc Roca. The Athletic revealed that Roca is available this summer for £10m this summer having hardly played for Bayern the last two seasons.
Since joining the German champions in 2020, Roca has made just 24 appearances in total, far below that of his final two years at Espanyol, where he was a stalwart in the Spanish side’s midfield.
Why isn’t this tidy assist by Marc Roca all over Bayern Twitter? Que jugador. pic.twitter.com/IdqAj9M0Hq

He made a total of 121 appearances for Espanyol before they were relegated to the Spanish second division, in which time he primarily operated in holding midfield, scoring 3 goals and assisting 6.
According to WhoScored.com, Roca has averaged 1.7 tackles and 0.8 interceptions per game, and 43 passes per game with an 85% accuracy. To compare, Kalvin Phillips averaged 2.4 tackles and 1.3 interceptions per game, completing 45 passes per game with a 79.5% accuracy.

So, Roca’s stats aren’t miles away from KP’s, and the Spaniard plays a similar role to Phillips in midfield too. Could Roca be competition or an outright replacement? We won’t know until Phillips either signs a deal at Elland Road or departs for pastures new, with The Whites ready to put a formal offer on the table once Phillips returns from international duty.
