Leeds United enquire for Lyon Star Maxwel Cornet

The Whites are in the market for a left-back, but Cornet is more than just a defender.

Leeds United have contacted Lyon to enquire about the price of Maxwel Cornet, according to The Sun’s Alan Nixon. The price has been quoted at around £20 million.

The Ivory Coast international scored two goals and assisted five from 36 Ligue 1 appearances last season, primarily playing left-back. Cornet has been a winger/striker for much of his career up to this point, consistently contributing around 10 goals per season when not injured.

But the 24-year-old has grown exponentially in the last year with his versatility serving him well. Now he’s caught the eye of Marcelo Bielsa, who is in need of another left-back option as well as competition on the wings.

The Whites have been linked to plenty of players so far, with Noa Lang links strengthening, while Javi Galan is a much cheaper option at left-back. However, Cornet could eclipse them both and bring the full package to the table.

Not only has he contributed well going forward, Cornet has shown solid numbers in the defensive department. WhoScored.com show that he made 1.9 tackles per game last season as well as 1.2 interceptions per 90.

In comparison with Ezgjan Alioski, he’s close to him on tackles (2.1) while beating him on interceptions (0.6), and Cornet would likely be the replacement for a likely Alioski departure.
