Leeds United recovered from going behind to win 3-1 against Portuguese side Pacos De Ferreira.
FULL TIME: Goals from Struijk, Hernandez and Costa secures a 3-1 win over Paços de Ferreira
— Leeds United (@LUFC) September 5, 2020
Leeds gave away a poor goal after a poor throw in, but goals from Pascal Struijk, Pablo Hernandez, and Helder Costa were enough for Leeds to claim a win.
All eyes are looking towards our trip to Anfield for the season opener against Liverpool in a week, and we will have to be more careful about losing the ball in transition than we were today because that would be more severely punished against a side of that quality.
Time now to look at each player and how they performed. As always you can tell me how wrong I am @mightywhitespod or @ThruItAllLUFC on twitter.
STARTING LINE-UP
Kiko Casilla - Gifted Pacos their first chance with a poor throw which missed Pascal Struijk by a mile. On the goal he was not helped by Leeds getting caught in transition, but he made it really easy for Amaral to pass the ball through his legs to give Silva a tap-in. 5/10

Luke Ayling - Solid enough barring a couple of poor passes in bad areas. 6/10
Oliver Casey - Played solidly throughout, made one excellent block to deny a goalbound effort. Some of his long passing was very impressive. 7/10
Leif Davis - Good early on, hit a couple of good crossfield passes. Lead Leeds’ counter attacks and pushed forward an incredible amount from left centre-back. Switched with Douglas for the second half as Leeds went to a back three. 7.5/10

Barry Douglas - Played as a left-back but very obviously switched to centre-back whenever Leif Davis pushed forward. Set up Struijk’s goal with an excellent cross from a free-kick. 7/10
Pascal Struijk - Made it 1-1 with a header from a Barry Douglas cross. Solid in his deep midfield role throughout. 7/10
Pablo Hernandez - Started on the right in the role we haven’t seen him play as much in recent times. Looked a bit frustrated towards half-time - a combination of him having a few misplaced passes, and several passes to him not finding him. Moved back inside for the second half. Scored a great goal to put Leeds 2-1 up, curling it into the top corner from 20 yards out. 7.5/10

Jamie Shackleton - Good energy but nothing standout in the first half. Played more of a right wing-back role in the second half. 6.5/10
Tyler Roberts - Some nice touches and won a few free-kicks in dangerous areas, including the one for Struijk’s goal. 6/10
Jack Harrison - Got on the ball a lot but didn’t quite get either his shots or his final ball right. 6/10
Patrick Bamford - Dropped deep a lot in the first half but didn’t see much from him as it was more about bringing others in to play. Second half was better. Set up Leeds’ second goal having won the ball high up the pitch. Good assist for the third goal as well with a lofted pass to put Helder Costa through on goal. 7.5/10
SUBSTITUTES
Helder Costa (for Roberts, HT) - Good step-over leading to Leeds second goal, went close soon after but was denied by good goalkeeping. Got on the scoresheet with a good finish to make it 3-1. 7/10

Ian Poveda (for Harrison, 69mins) - Caused problems for defenders when running at them and set up a good chance with a through ball. 6/10
Robbie Gotts (for Hernandez , 74mins) - Pressed well and had one good shot saved. 6/10
Charlie Cresswell (for Bamford, 87mins) - Immediately took a bad touch on the edge of the box and gave away a dangerous free-kick. Unfortunate start but he has looked very impressive in the u23 side, will put that one down to nerves. N/A
