Leeds United went out in the second round of the League Cup on penalties for the second successive season. Losing 9-8 on penalties to Hull City after a 1-1 draw.
Hull took an early lead through former Leeds forward Mallik Wilks. Wilks and George Honeyman were both given acres of space on the edge of the box and Wilks’ left-foot shot went in via a deflection.
Leeds were second best the entire match and Hull had several good chances. Most of the good play came through Wilks, who was clearly out to impress.
Leeds got a completely undeserved equaliser in stoppage time through North Macedonia international Ezgjan Alioski.
Ezgjan Alioski and Lewie Coyle were the only two to miss out of the first 18 penalty takers, but Jamie Shackleton’s miss allowed Alfie Jones to score the winning penalty.
Time now to look at each player and how they performed. As always you can tell me how wrong I am @mightywhitespod or @ThruItAllLUFC on twitter.
STARTING LINE-UP
Kiko Casilla - Captain for the day. I wouldn’t have him playing, but I cannot see any justification for making him captain.
Poor clearance lost the ball before Wilks’ opening goal. Made a few good saves in the first half. Came out to punch early in the second half and made a mess of it. Excellent save to deny Greg Docherty midway through the second half. Made enough good saves to say he kept us in the match. 7/10
Jamie Shackleton - Good pace to cover when needed and stood up defensively better than some. 6/10
Charlie Cresswell - Senior Debut. Missed a great headed chance from a corner. Sloppy touch to give a great chance to Wilks soon after. Seemed to struggle defensively and looked a bit nervous. Some poor headers and tackles in the second half too. 4.5/10
Leif Davis - Showed some good pace at times but wasn’t defensively solid. 5/10
Barry Douglas - Put in some excellent set pieces. Got done for pace defensively a coupleof times. 5.5/10
Oliver Casey - Barely touched the ball for the first half an hour, which is a real problem in the “Phillips Role”. Had very little impact and it was not a shock to see him go off at half-time. 5/10
Olly Casey very much showing his inexperience in the DM position. After half an hour he had only had 3 touches. Considering he’s supposed to be the first forward option in the build up, this is a big problem. pic.twitter.com/6allROt8s3

Ian Poveda - Looked dangerous when running at players. Leeds most dangerous player in the second half. 6/10
Mateusz Bogusz - Unlucky with a good through ball for Tyler Roberts but the keeper came off his line well. Looked good on the ball moving through midfield. The pick of the Leeds players in a poor first half. Not as prominent in the second half. 6/10
Tyler Roberts - Should be looking to stand out in a game like this. If he did stand out it was for the wrong reasons. 4.5/10
Ezgjan Alioski - Had a poor game throughout. Scored with a good finish to equalise in Stoppage Time undeservedly. 5.5/10
Rodrigo - Beaten easily when he tried to lead the press. Seemed out of sync with his teammates in terms of both movement and some of his passing. 5/10
SUBSTITUTES
Pascal Struijk (for Casey, HT) - Much more involved than the man he replaced but not as incisive with his passing as we have seen previously. 5/10
Robbie Gotts (for Bogusz, 78mins) - Had Leeds firstshot on target in the 89th minute. Looked tidy enough. 6/10
