Leeds linked with move for “Turkish Messi” Emre Mor. This would not be a good idea.

The player is incredibly talented but has had a career beset by attitude problems.

To get this out there before anything - I don’t think for a second this is happening, nor should it in my opinion.

A report in Turkish outlet Fotospor has linked Leeds United with a move for out of favour Turkey winger Emre Mor from Celta Vigo, although the player is currently on loan at Galatasaray.

We all know how Leeds fans feel about Galatasaray, we don’t need to go in to it, RIP Chris and Kev.

Mor was born in Denmark and was highly rated in the youth team at Lyngby BK, but was released due to attitude problems with Lyngby BK Director of Football Birger Jørgensen saying at the time (this could be a poor translation but it gets the gist):

“The decision was made on the basis of an overall assessment, which states that we do not see ourselves able to realize Emre’s potential without compromising the values we stand for at Lyngby Boldklub. We obviously do not want to, and therefore the natural consequence is that the contract is terminated. We wish Emre good luck in the future.”

The at the time Denmark youth international was picked up by Nordsjælland and quickly established himself in the first team, performing well enough to earn a move to German giants Borussia Dortmund and get a five-year-deal.

When at Dortmund the attitude problems reared their head again, Mor fell out with then-manager Thomas Tuchel and he made only 12 appearances before being sold to Celta Vigo for €13 million. However, he was still the same guy. Celta Vigo Coach Juan Carlos Unzue explained his lack of playing time by saying: “Emre has to understand that technical skill is not enough to earn him more playing time. There are no miracles or coincidences. Mentally, he needs to change.”

He changed his international allegiances to Turkey in 2016, and has scored one goal (against Moldova) in 15 appearances for the national team. In his early days in the set-up he earned the nickname of the “Turkish Messi” thanks to his size, style of play, and skill level - that has not lead to a similar quality of output though.

He is right type of player positionally for Leeds, playing on the wing or as a number 10. However, he is not the right type of player in terms of attitude and having played for Galatasaray he is not likely to be taken to by the fans if he was to have a poor start.

Sky Sports have linked the forward with a move to Brentford FC, I think this is far more likely than a move to Leeds. Although manager Thomas Frank has been public about having a “no dickheads” policy which Emre Mor could struggle with based on past behaviour.

Emre Mor has all the talent, but with his attitude is not a risk I would be taking in a Championship promotion push. Would you take the chance? Let us know in the comments below or on Twitter @ThruItAllLUFC.
