So, this weekend just keeps getting worse and worse for Leeds fans.

After the news Saturday that Pontus Jansson would reportedly be off to Brentford, now comes more speculation that another key player from last season could also be departing.

Kemar Roofe was a key part of last season, leading the club in goals for the second straight season. Despite the big-money acquisition of Patrick Bamford from Middlesbrough, Roofe kept the starting spot until he was injured, and did well to fight his way back into the team.

He wasn’t fully fit at the end of the season, just when Leeds needed him to be 100% healthy, and the season went down in flames despite him coming back ahead of schedule.

Roofe’s contract is up next year, and there have been rumours that he wants a new contract that would pay him considerably more than he’s making right now, which would seem a bit fair. However, if Leeds decide they do sell him instead, this could be a very bad sign.

Jack Clarke has already been sold, although he’s already come back on loan. Jansson looks like he’s off and Roofe could be as well. It’s the Championship and Leeds, so losing players after good seasons isn’t anything new. But what has separated this version of the club has been planning ahead and trying in reinvest in the squad despite the sales.

Last season, the club made a number of high-profile loan moves, something that they’ve tried to do again this season with Jack Harrison coming back and Helder Costa arriving from Wolverhampton. However, selling the team’s best central defender and highest scoring forward without replacements lined up is extremely poor planning.

If Leeds are to succeed then quality replacements will need to be made. Tyler Roberts and Gaetano Berardi are not going to cut it.
