| "Our focus is on the three points" Marcelo talks Friday's game, and how Wigan are playing better than their current league position suggests
— Leeds United (@LUFC) April 17, 2019
Leeds will host Wigan on Good Friday, looking to pick up the three points as the end of the season draws near with Leeds within striking distance of automatic promotion. Leeds are currently in second place in the table, four points behind leaders Norwich City and three points above third placed Sheffield United going into the Easter fixtures. It’s all come down to the next four matches, with Leeds eyeing a return to the Premier League after 15 years outside of the top flight.
However, it’s not going to be a celebration or a party later today, as Wigan have caused other promotion contenders problems lately, and they aren’t going to just roll over and let Leeds win, as they sit one spot above the relegation zone on 42 points, ahead of Rotherham United who sit on 40 points. Despite their low position in the table Wigan have drawn with Norwich and Bristol City, and in the case of the Norwich result, it took a last-minute equalizer from Teemu Pukki for Norwich to even get a point out of a game that most people expected them to easily win.
Marcelo Bielsa cautioned his team and the fans not to get ahead of themselves, relaying during the pre-match press conference that Wigan’s form was much better than their place in the table. Apart from a couple matches, Leeds have usually taken care of business at home against teams below them in the table, and while Leeds are favoured in this match, don’t be surprised if Wigan play pretty well and refuse to go away.
The lineup will almost certainly look the same as it did against Sheffield Wednesday, with Liam Cooper still a doubt with an injury. Gaetano Berardi did well filling in for the captain, so don’t expect the defence to skip a beat this afternoon. A Leeds win would put them three points closer to promotion with only three games left in the season.
