Leeds United can boast having fans from all over the world. And it seems, so can Newell’s Old Boys. With Marcelo Bielsa now managing Leeds, it seems the two club’s fans have started to enjoy a new relationship.
For those unfamiliar, Marcelo Bielsa is a living legend at Newell’s Old Boys, and has created an almost cult-like following from fans of clubs that he has managed in the past, including Athletic Bilbao, Marseille, and Club Atlas in Mexico.
The relationship that Bielsa has with Newell’s, however, is special, as he’s even donated millions towards the building of a hotel on the training ground of Newells for players and families to stay at.
One of the people who run the unofficial Newell’s Old Boys English Twitter account decided to go see Leeds United and Marcelo Bielsa in person. He settled on tonight’s match against West Bromwich Albion, and took a trip halfway across the world to go see Leeds, probably wondering what kind of reception he would get.
Arrived at my AirBnB in Leeds last night. There's a few lovely personal touches in the flat to make me feel right at home pic.twitter.com/ktCWWSyOVp— Newell's Old Boys - English (@Newells_en) March 1, 2019
He probably didn’t to worry. When he showed up in Leeds to stay at his air BnB, he got a surprise. Yes, that’s a whole ton of Newell’s branded merchandise on the bed, and this from a fanbase that is practically allergic to red. Most of that stuff is hard to find in the UK, so it took a good amount of time and effort to assemble all of that.
He had previous inquired about getting tickets to see Leeds at Elland Road, and immediately got a response from a number of season ticket holders looking to help him out.
Whatever happens this season at Leeds, it seems that the cult of Bielsa and the cult of Newells has some new fans in Yorkshire, while Leeds United also now have some fans in Rosario, Argentina.
All Bielsa aren’t we!
