Recent reports have suggested that Leeds United are interested in 22 year old Everton defender Matthew Pennington. An unproven player with potential, it is possible that The Toffees would let him go somewhere else with the recent addition of Michael Keane.

We have lost Kyle Bartley, who is currently being linked with a move to none other, than Middlesbrough. So in order to cope with his loss, we would need another center-back. A signing like Pennington would show our ambition to be a Premier League caliber club, and let’s not forget, Matthew Pennington scored at Anfield in their most recent Merseyside Derby against Liverpool.

The Warrington born defender has been with Everton since 2005, but didn’t make his Everton debut until 2015. Before that, he had made 3 successful loan spell periods with Tranmere Rovers, Coventry City, and Walsall, all of which were in League One in their respective seasons. Pennington is no stranger to the physical English football style of play and would suit a team like ours nicely. If you pair him with Pontus, we would have a big duo to help out Wiedwald.

Now, let’s talk about Matthew Pennington’s price. He is currently a defender probably 6th on Everton’s depth charts, but he brings a lot to offer. I think that if Leeds made a bid of around £3 million, Ronald Koeman couldn’t refuse it at all.

When he played for Ronald Koeman last season, he wasn’t great, but he wasn’t bad either. A transfer to a team like Leeds would see him grow into a good English Center-back, and he can push us into being a Premier League caliber team.

Furthermore, I do not think Pennington will get a new contract at Everton. A permanent move somewhere else for a player like him is more beneficial than a loan move, and I think he is ready to be the lockdown defender he was meant to be.

I would personally love him at Leeds United, he can bring us a good winning mentality. What do you think about us signing a player like him?
