Leeds United drawn away at Newport County in the FA Cup

Stop me if you’ve heard this before

For the second straight Cup competition, Leeds United have drawn an away match against League Two’s Welsh side Newport County. And unlike the first match, this Cup tie will actually be played at Newport, as the club was relying the pitch at its home last time and the tie had to be played at Elland Road instead.

Leeds United already soundly beat Newport County at home this year in the League Cup, with Kemar Roofe scoring a hat-trick. Roofe was unlucky not to score a 4th goal, as his chip of the Newport keeper hit the crossbar. It has been, far and away, the best game of Kemar Roofe’s Leeds career, with the young striker finally proving to Christiansen that he could lead the line as a striker rather than as a winger, where he had been played at by Garry Monk since his transfer from Oxford United the season before.

If TC uses a similar team as to what was used before, expect to see some of the Academy players at Leeds get a game. Madger Gomes, a signee from Liverpool in the offseason, featured at right wing, where he played well. Paudie O’Connor and Egohan Stokes also both played in the match, however Gomes shone brightly. The match also featured Vurnon Anita and Mateusz Klich in the central midfield, which might be the only time the two of them will have played together in that role at the club, and with the FA Cup third round tie taking place in January, it wouldn’t be shocking to see Klich not be around for the match, as he seems to be in TC’s doghouse.

Anyway, here’s hoping that this match against Newport County goes about the same as the last one did, where Leeds ran out to a 5-1 victory against an opponent that wasn’t on the same level.
