Leeds Player Ratings - Leicester 3 - 1 Leeds

A decent effort but in the end the Premier League side showed their quality.

Leeds United put up a brave fight but succumbed to Leicester City who produced a good second half performance to knock Leeds out of the Carabao Cup. However, but for a mistake at a key time it could have been a very different story.

Time now to look at each player and how they performed. As always you can tell me how wrong I am @mightywhitespod or @ThruItAllLUFC on twitter.

STARTING LINE-UP

Felix Wiedwald - Talk about someone doing no favours for their cause. 100% at fault for Leicester’s equaliser when he failed to show any conviction coming out for the ball. The sort of mistake that Leeds fans are becoming too used to seeing and without a substantial improvement I could see him being an ex-Leeds player by the start of next season. If Leeds had gone in at half-time still 1-0 ahead this game could have been very different. Improved in the second half and came out for a couple of balls well, making his mistake even more infuriating. 4.5/10

Vernon Anita - Solid enough at Right-Back in the first half when up against Demarai Gray. Second half much tougher having had to move to Left-Back. To be fair to him that is his weaker side and he ended the game trying to deal with Riyad Mahrez which would be tough for anyone. 6/10

Pontus Jansson - Again, nowhere near his best. The defence looked a bit static but they were up against a strikeforce which cost over £50m so they were always going to have a tough day. Didn’t communicate well with Wiedwald for the goal but for me the blame lays with the goalkeeper on that. Can do much better. If fit, it will remain Cooper and Pennington for the Sheffield United game. 5/10

Conor Shaughnessy - Did ok in the first half but really struggled to deal with Leicester’s pace and movement in the second half. Has the same mitigating circumstances as Jansson. 5/10

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson - Was having a very solid game but only got to play 45 minutes due to an injury. A couple of sloppy moments in possession but looked like he may play himself into contention for an appearance in the league (especially with Gaetano Berardi suspended). With the injury that now looks unlikely but hopefully he isn’t out for too long. 6/10

Mateusz Klich - Still waiting for Klich to show something that would make me think he is worthy of a place in the side. Started ok and wasn’t terrible but Leicester were able to get past him far too easily and on the ball he was very quiet. 5/10

Kalvin Phillips - Did well in spells and was quiet in other spells. Better performance than Klich but I don’t think playing in a 2 in a deeper role suits him as well as the system played against Bristol City. Was subbed off so think he will start on Friday against Sheffield United. 6/10

Kemar Roofe - Some good movement and passing during the first-half including one very good through ball for Grot which lead to a decent chance. Quieter after the initial good spell from Leeds and much like the team as a whole, got poorer as the match went on. 6/10

Pablo Hernandez - Man of the match from a Leeds perspective. Always looking to create something and his goal was an absolutely tremendous finish. Has all the quality in the world even if sometimes he lacks the legs to back it up. Him playing 90mins suggests he will only be a substitute for Friday’s match. 7.5/10

Pawel Cibicki - Could have forgotten he was playing to be honest. Wasn’t so terrible that he stood out but has a very long way to go if he is going to have a shot at getting in the side for league games. 5/10

Jay-Roy Grot - His first half performance was the best I have seen him play in a Leeds shirt (which admittedly isn’t a high bar) with some good link up play and a couple of decent efforts on goal. However, in the second half he didn’t offer nearly enough in the second half and seemed to get worse as the game went on. 5.5/10

SUBSTITUTES

Luke Ayling (for CBJ, HT) - Even when he finally gets a rest, someone gets injured and he has to come on. Better going forward than Anita but wasn’t any better defensively today. Had a tough task against Leicester forward players though. 6/10

Hadi Sacko (for Cibicki, 65mins) - More of the Sacko from earlier in the season. Touch was poor at times and he didn’t look to have the same confidence he has had over the past few weeks. 4.5/10

Ronaldo Vieira (for Phillips, 71mins) - By the time he came on Leicester were very much on top and he wasn’t really going to be able to do anything about it. Tried his best but no real impact today. 5/10
