Leeds United’s Three Greatest FA Cup Goals

As Leeds take on Cambridge United this Monday, let’s look back at some of United’s greatest FA Cup moments.

The FA Cup is back.

Magic.

Finding it hard to get excited about Monday’s game against Cambridge given our current league priority? I’m not.

Despite growing up watching my football in the late nineties, the era I think was the beginning of the decline of the FA Cup, I am a still big fan of the cup. The way the media still tries to portray “the wonder of the cup” is almost pathetic, but I’m a football purist and I love it.

How can you not love a cup where Jermaine Beckford ruins red scum dreams? I still celebrate that goal every 3rd January.

Or where minnows like Blyth Spartans knock out teams five leagues above them? It’s an amazing thing.

Cambridge United is our first opponent though, providing a chance to see what the Leeds youth academy can do. Garry Monk made wholesale changes for the several League Cup games this term, but I expect even more changes for this game given our busy Christmas period and the fact that the league is the major priority, especially when we sit in 5th place.

Before we get ahead of ourselves and start to preview the game here at TIAT, I want to take a look at my top three Leeds United FA Cup Goals, obvious though some may be. Feel free to disagree with me or let me know which I left out in the comments below.

1. Manchester United 0 - Leeds United 1, 3 January 2010

Let’s start off with this cracker….

January 3, remember the date. Back when Leeds were a lowly league one team, this was a massive result and really shows why the FA Cup is great. Most of the Leeds squad that just missed out on the play offs under Simon Grayson were part of this promotion-winning side and will always be a side I have great memories of watching.

2. Leeds United 2 - Tottenham 1, 27 January 2013

Ross McCormack against Spurs is my number two...

Another goal from recent year, but one that brought me much happiness. A classic McCormack goal and one that led to another bit of Leeds giant-killing as Leeds beat Tottenham at Elland Road.

3. Leeds United 1 - Arsenal 0, 6 May 1972

FA CUP CHAMPIONS!

The time Leeds United won the FA Cup. Sniffer Clarke in the 53rd minute.

Don’t need to say any more than that.

So those are my three greatest FA Cup goals, what was yours? Did I leave any out? Reach out on social media or let me know in the comments below. And be sure to check back here for more FA Cup coverage throughout the weekend.

Cambridge on Monday, then back to winning the league on Tuesday. MOT.
