Rochdale vs Leeds United: Stat Preview

Andrew Dalton previews our FA Cup clash against Rochdale.

For a club so steeped in history, Leeds United record in the FA Cup leaves a lot to be desired, winners only once in 1972, thanks to an Allan Clarke header at Wembley against Arsenal, the rest of it, is grim reading.

They reached the final in 1965, a year on from winning promotion from the old second division to the first, but were defeated 2-1 against Liverpool, with Billy Bremner scoring the whites goal.

They had to wait five seasons for the next visit to the Twin Towers, where the Leeds v Chelsea rivalry was born. The first game at Wembley finished 2-2 thanks to goals from Mick Jones and Jack Charlton, before the losing the replay 2-1 at Old Trafford, in what can only be described as brutal affair! Again Jones was on the score-sheet for the Whites.

A year later came one of the biggest shocks in FA Cup history as fourth division Colchester United knocked Leeds out at the fifth round stage winning 3-2 at Layer Road!

However, worse was to come in 1973 as Bob Stokoes second division Sunderland side, defeated the cup holders thanks to an Ian Porterfield strike and wonder save from Jim Montgomery and that sadly was the last time the Whites have made it through to Wembley.

There has been a couple of near misses though, in both 1977 and 1987, the Whites reached the last four of the competition only to be denied a trip to Wembley but Manchester United (2-1) in 77 and Coventry City (32) in 87.

In more recent times the best the Whites have managed in the famous competition is the quarter finals first in 1996 when Liverpool defeated them 3-0 after a replay, second in 1998 when a Don Goodman goal for Wolves did for them at Elland Road and finally in 2003, when a Neil Warnock inspired Sheffield United won 1-0 at a packed Bramall Lane.

Although one famous date was to come, January 3rd 2010, when League One Leeds United toppled Premiership Champions Manchester United, thanks to a goal from top scorer Jermaine Beckford!

Finally from me a brief look back of our other FA Cup round 3 games from 2004, see how many your remember!
