So we're back at Elland Road after a decent start to the new season, here are some stats ahead of our first Yorkshire Derby of the new season.
TV
This is not the first time the fixture has been televised, back in Season 98/99 our 2-1 win over the Owls was broadcast live on Sky Sports, in that game we fell behind to an early header from Andy Booth, however goals from Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and a header from Jonathan Woodgate secured a 2-1 win for the Whites. Our games at home to the Owls in January 1998 and October 1999 were shown as main highlights game on Match on the Day. For the record we lost 2-1 in January 98 and won 2-0 in October 99.
Firsts
There have been a few firsts down the years when facing the Owls at Elland Road, below are a select few: Steve Hodge first goal for the club in a 1-1 draw in August 1991. Imre Varadis' first goal in the Premier League in a 3-1 win in December 1992. David White's first goal at Elland Road in a 2-2 draw at home to the Owls in May 1994. Ian Rush, Lee Bowyer, Lee Sharpe and Nigel Martyn's first appearance in front of the Elland Road crowd in a 2-0 defeat in August 1996. Jonathan Woodgate's first goal for the club in the 2-1 win in November 1998. Paul Butler's first goal at Elland Road in a 3-0 win in January 2006. Radostin Kisishev's first debut in a disappointing 3-2 defeat in March 2007. Luke Varney's first double in a Whites shirt cam in the 2-1 win last season.
Third game in
Since relegation from the Premiership in 2004, our record in our 3rd league game is as follows:
Season 2004-05 – Drew 0-0 at Wolves Season 2005-06 - Drew 0-0 at Luton Season 2006-07 - Lost 1-0 at Crystal Palace Season 2007-08 - Beat Nottingham Forest 2-1 at the City Ground Season 2008-09 - Drew 1-1 at Yeovil Town Season 2009-10 - Beat Walsall 2-1 at the Bescot Stadium (Banks) Season 2010-11 - Beat Milwall 3-1 at Elland Road Season 2011-12 - Beat Hull City 4-1 at Elland Road Season 2012-13 - Beat Peterborough 2-1 at London Road So that's 4 wins in a row, can we make it 5?
Early Yorkshire Derby??
You may think this is perhaps the earliest in the season that we have been involved in the Yorkshire Derby! However you would be wrong! Back in Season 87-88 (the year before we had suffered heartache in both the FA cup and the Play Offs). We travelled to Oakwell to face Barnsley on the opening day of the season. For the record we drew the game 1-1 and Leeds born Bob Taylor scored the whites goal, although we were playing in the yellow and blue burton shirt!
