With the fury of the fans on his neck, manager Neil Warnock made a number of changes to his starting eleven to try and get past fellow Championship side Birmingham City.
Ashdown replaced Kenny, Drury and Lees returned to the defence, Brown and Varney moved into the midfield and Ross McCormack started up front through the middle. Hallelujah!!
The game kicked off and and so did the countdown to our first shot on goal - or of course our first corner. They didn't come as Austin blazed his shots high and wide of the target.
After eight minutes, Adam Drury's poor luck with injuries continued after he took a knock on his ankle. Aidy White was his replacement.
Birmingham had the first chance of the game when Wade Elliot dragged his shot just wide of the post.
Elliot didn't have long to wait until he finally opened the scoring - some quick counter-attacking from Redmond allowed Elliott time and he placed the ball home to give the Blues the lead.
United should have pegged one back almost immediately but Varney's header went wide of the mark. As half-time approached the anger and rage was growing with Leeds still not having a shot on target.
The Whites started strongly in the second-half and were beginning to pass the ball around for a change. With the possession stats stacking up in their favour - Leeds began to grow in confidence.
An equaliser did come and it was Ross McCormack who got his name on the score-sheet. Diouf's build-up play was rewarded when Ross drilled the ball home.
With a goal behind them, Warnock's side pushed for that important winner and it came via a penalty in the 75th minute. Austin's cross hit the hand of Paul Robinson according to the referee and Diouf stepped up calmly to chip it home.
Green went close as he supported from the right and the home side threw on Zigic and Lovenkrands to send the tie in to extra-time. Zigic went close with a header but it was cleared by White on the line, Lovenkrands then had a volley saved brilliantly from Ashdown.
Leeds eventually held-on for the win and the chance to face Spurs in the cup. The fans will still want to see more improvements after a poor display against Barnsley but it's a step in the right direction.
