Blackpool 2 - 1 Leeds United: Player Ratings

Last night's performance was disappointing, plain and simple.

But, in all honesty I expected a very hard game against a solid Blackpool side. Unfortunately for us Blackpool were the better side and we were comfortably beaten. The score-line appears to show that the game was a close one...it wasn't.

Instead of being down in the dumps ( I was for the car-journey) home, we have to move on. We're two games into the season...we had a great start with Wolves and Blackpool are a very difficult team to play, never mind away from home.

Here are my ratings:

Paddy Kenny - 8

I think anyone at last night's game would agree with me...without Paddy the score-line could have been much much worse. His kicking was hampered by the strong seaside wind, but his shot stopping saved us on so many occasions.

Sam Byram - 7

Some readers might be surprised with a 7 for Byram considering his poor positioning and defending for their second goal. BUT his interceptions and energy from defence for me is fantastic for someone so young. Playing without a care in the world..which is good but he will learn from his mistakes.

Tom Lees - 8

Regular readers of the site will know that I'm usually not Lees' biggest fan. However, last night I thought Lees was fantastic and was solid both with the ball at feet and in the air. His goal was scrappy but he rose well and they call count.

Jason Pearce - 7

Pearce was once again involved heavily, throwing himself into tackles and climbing brilliantly in the air. A few missed passes here or there but solid enough game for me.

Lee Peltier - 7

Did well to play out of position and handled Tom Ince and Matt Phillips as best as he could. Looks solid and used his strength well in several situations.

Rodolph Austin - 6

The big midfielder struggled for me in the park with the pace. In several situations he couldn't just quite there to make a tackle. His clearances were reckless and often returned straight back at us. When he did time his runs well he nailed the opposition but a learning curve for the Jamaican.

David Norris - 6

I thought Norris gave his all last night going forward, spreading the ball around to try and create the odd chance. His encouragement to others around him was clear to see and he leads by example with his constant running. His defensive work was quite poor but still impressed with the start to his career.

Luke Varney - 5

Unfortunately for Varney his return to Bloomfield Road wasn't a successful one. At fault for the first goal and poor going forward, Varney will be hoping to forget about last night. Quickly.

Aidy White - 4

Not a winger, not a left-back. Bags and bags of pace but no skill going forward. I struggle to see what he offers us, harsh I know but my feelings at present.

Ross McCormack - 6

Looked the best of the top four in my opinion. Great assist for the goal from the corner, put some dangerous crosses in also. His height is a problem as we really needed to hold the ball up last night being away from home.

Luciano Becchio - 5

In the air Luciano will always cause problems but last night he didn't do enough when we had the ball. Could have scored two goals with one a free header at goal after some great work by Austin.

El-Hadji Diouf - 4

Diouf came on with 25 to go and didn't really do much apart from a few neat passes. The constant pressure on our own goal didn't help.

Danny Pugh - 0

Wasn't on long enough to do anything. Even if he did could he get higher than a 2?
