Leeds United’s new goal keeper Paddy Kenny has stated that he had no hesitation in dropping out of the Premier League to join Neil Warnock’s promotion charge at Elland Road.
The 34-year-old completed his long and drawn out move from Queens Park Rangers at Thorp Arch on Wednesday and is confident that promotion is realistic for United this season. Kenny who has signed a three year contract with the club says he’s delighted that his move is now complete.
“I'm delighted it’s done, this is a massive club and I’m excited for the challenge ahead. It’s been rumoured for awhile, but once I’d spoken to the manager and heard his plans for the club I really wanted to come, there were no doubts.”
Paddy also told the club’s website that he’s confident that his and Warnock’s promotion feats in the past can definitely be repeated at Elland Road.
Kenny said:
“I'm hopeful we can do what we did at QPR and help this club back into the Premier League where it belongs. I’m from around here and have a lot of family and friends who are big Leeds United fans. It’s one of the biggest clubs around and I want to show what I can do.
This is the fourth time that he's signed me and he knows what he'll get from me and I know what I'll get from him. As soon as I had the opportunity to come here I was delighted to take him up on it and his record at this level and for promotions speaks for itself."
Kenny also hinted that further arrivals are imminent at Elland Road and stated that he is excited by the potential talent coming in.
“With the players he (Warnock) is looking to bring in and those he’ll get I’m sure we’ll be pushing up there. He told me to come here be myself, bring my experience and try and help this club get promoted. I’ve done really well and hopefully I can carry that on here."
Paddy has two promotions to his name and is particularly known by Leeds fans as being a part of Sheffield United’s 2005/2006 promotion winning side and believes Leeds will have to grind out results to achieve their ambitions.
“First and foremost it’s a difficult league and we know that. You have to make your home games winnable and hopefully with crowds here we can do that and try and be up at the top of the league. I’ve had had a bit off stick off the fans in the past but hopefully I can change their minds and do well for them.”
It’s clear that Neil Warnock has played a pivotal role in capturing this signing which could prove to be massively important for United. Kenny’s experience of the division and achieving success in the division should bring some much needed composure into a key area of the pitch for Warnock’s men which will be crucial in grinding out results.
