Leeds United will open their 2012/13 campaign with a game against League One outfit Shrewsbury Town in the first round of the Capital One Cup. The game, yet to have a confirmed date, will take place at Elland Road before the Whites kick start their league campaign on the 18th August.
Newly promoted Shrewsbury Town reached the third round of the Carling Cup (as it was known then) last season when they traveled to the Emirates Stadium to face Arsenal, having already knocked both Derby County and Swansea City out of the competition. It was a game which saw England's latest star Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain bag his first goal for the Gunners after James Collins had given the visitors a shock lead.
Speaking about the draw, United manager Neil Warnock said:
"You always want a cup draw at home. It's our first game of the season and it's at Elland Road which is great. I'm actually hoping we can play the game on the weekend before."
"Usually in these games you maybe give opportunities to a few players because they fall between your first league games, but we want to get through in the competition so it's an opportunity for us."
Speaking about Shrewsbury boss Graham Turner, Warnock said:
"It'll be nice to rub shoulders with Graham again. We go right back to his days as Wolves manager. My first league game at Scarborough was against Wolves when Graham was there and that was a fantastic occasion."
Shrewsbury will be on the lookout to cause an upset once again and United will need to ensure they have their wits about them if they are to progress to the second round.
