The Whites went in at half-time with an optimistic 1-0 lead through Becchio. However with an early second half goal from Juan Mata, Chelsea seemed to get stronger from then on. With 2 goals in 3 minutes Leeds were trailing 1-3 and attempting to chase the game. The final score of 1-5 flattering a very good Chelsea side.
Below are the thoughts of both managers about the game:
"We made it difficult for them, and if Tom Lees header had gone in just before half-time who knows what would have happened,
"Then a mistake cost us the equaliser so quickly after, and you had world class players relieved they were drawing a game they could have been 2-0 down in. That was the end of the story really. We kept going for a half an hour or so, but their quality shone through. They have world class players don't they?
"You knew they'd get a roasting at half-time, I could see Frank Lampard wasn't happy with a few of them, but they didn't have to work for that equaliser, and that was very disappointing. We are miles away from them, but it shows what can be done.
"We've got to move on. We've had a great cup run. We worked hard against Shrewsbury and Oxford to get to Everton, Southampton, and Chelsea, and it's been a great experience.
"I was really proud of them. It was a great cup tie, and at times we played some great stuff. We scored a fabulous goal."
“It’s important for any manager to win trophies. When you win games, it will be easier getting everybody together.
“For now, we concentrate on the semi-final and after the final we can talk about what it means. I’m pleased to be winning, pleased in the way that we won and pleased that coming back from Japan, with the jet lag and without sleeping too much, the players are tired but were still fantastic.
“When you go to a semi-final, any team will be difficult. Swansea are a good team, they try to play football and now we are in a semi-final the motivation [to get to Wembley] will be there for both teams.”
