Huddersfield Town v Leeds United – The Last Five

It’s Cup Final day in Huddersfield as Leeds visit whatever their stadium is called these days to take on the Terriers. Despite the Town fans claims that this is a serious rivalry the fact that this piece takes us back to 1986, a time before even I started attending matches, and long before most of the Huddersfield fans who populate their “boys pen” were born shows how insignificant Town are to us in the bigger picture. However I will admit that they have become a slight irritation over recent years and a win for the Whites is long overdue.

27th February 2010 – Huddersfield Town 2 Leeds United 2

Simon Grayson took his promotion chasing side to the Galpharm to take on Lee Clarke’s side who were looking to maintain a push for the play-offs. Huddersfield took a fortunate lead when Anthony Pilkington’s 25 yard effort took a deflection which totally wrong-footed Casper Ankergren in the United goal. Leeds though came back well and turned the game on its head with two goals in five minutes just past the hour. Jonny Howson grabbed an equaliser, turning in a Robert Snodgrass cross. Five minutes later Leeds were in front as Luciano Becchio tapped home, Snodgrass again the provider. Town though fought their way back into the match and Gary Roberts forced home the equaliser with five minutes remaining. Leeds had the last laugh though; they earned automatic promotion, Town missed out in the play-offs.

The match at the Galpharm Stadium came at a difficult time for Simon Grayson’s side. This was the second in a run of three consecutive away defeats which threatened to derail the Whites season, but in the end turned the campaign around. An early goal from Peter Clarke turned out to be the decisive moment in the game as Leeds failed to take the numerous chances they created. This result saw Huddersfield leapfrog the Whites into 7th place, and after a defeat at Hereford three days later Simon Grayson saw fit to read the riot act to his squad. They responded by winning 8 games in an 11 match unbeaten run that took them into the playoffs. Huddersfield slipped away into 9th place.

15th April 2008 – Huddersfield Town 1 Leeds United 0

Leeds had started the season 15 points behind Huddersfield in their first ever season in the third tier of English football. By the time the two sides met in April, The Whites had overtaken Town and were heading for a remarkable run to the play-offs. This was to be the final League defeat of the season for Gary McAllister’s side. Both sides had been reduced to 10 men in the first half with Jonathan Douglas sent off for Leeds and Jon Worthington dismissed for the home side. The winning goal came from Andy Holdsworth 15 minutes from time.

15th September 1987 – Huddersfield Town 0 Leeds United 0

A crowd of fewer than 10000 at Leeds Road witnessed a dismal 0-0 draw between two sides who suffered disappointing seasons. Leeds would fail to live up to the expectations following their near misses of the previous season in League and Cup, whilst Huddersfield would drop into the third tier, suffering a 10-1 defeat at Manchester City on the way down. The two sides would not meet again in the league for 21 years.

6th September 1986 – Huddersfield Town 1 Leeds United 1

Just over 9000 were in attendance at Leeds Road for this early season clash. Duncan Shearer netted for the home side with John Sheridan replying for the Whites. Leeds would reach the first ever Football League Play-Offs, missing out on a place in the top flight with a defeat to Charlton and also featured in a classic FA Cup Semi-Final, just losing out to eventual winners Coventry City. Huddersfield sacked long serving manager Mick Buxton in December eventually finishing 17th.
