Victor Orta left a mess at Leeds

A relegation for any club is a deterring mark in its history. Even a team devoid of capable players to play in that division expects minimum survival as their league achievement.

Relegation to a lower division affects the club both financially and emotionally. For Leeds United, who were relegated to the Championship from the Premier League last season, a similar situation needs to be endured.

However, the club has gone through numerous ups and downs in English Football history. Relegation is not the low they expected after two seasons in the top flight, but this isn’t something new to them.

This coming season, Leeds are again set to feature in the English second division but they have a financial conundrum to sort out. The appointment of Victor Orta as sporting director six years back paid its dividends but now, the club must face the consequences of some of his inept decisions.

Indeed, Orta was the one who appointed Marcelo Bielsa as head coach, the man who ultimately brought Leeds United back to the Premier League after a 16-year absence. There is no denying that the Spaniard had worked wonders and amazed the fans in his initial years but an expiry date is there for everything, wonders soon turned into woes.

Due to the business performed by Orta during the last two years, The Whites are taking a hit of £165.5 million ahead of the start of the new season. The club spent £119 million in transfer fees to make the team Premier League ready but it yielded negligible results. A meagre £3.5 million could only be recouped from sales as things stand.

The likes of Robin Koch, Rasmus Kristensen, Maximilian Wober, Brenden Aaronson, Marc Roca and Diego Llorente were bought for amounts of £12.5 million, £12 million, £12 million, £25 million, £10 million and £18 million respectively. A total of £85.5 million in transfer fees were paid to materialise the operations of these players and Leeds couldn’t derive a single penny from them leaving the club. The owners of the club had no option but to send these members of the squad on loan to avoid incurring a bigger loss which may result due to FFP norms from a sale.

While the club could only generate an income from the sale of Tyler Roberts and Rodrigo, the total amounts to £3.5 million net. The sale proceedings are practically negligible considering where the financial position is right now and there is no way foreseen to balance the funds.

Leeds United now hope that some of their loaned-out players outperform expectations so that when they return, they get sold for a profitable price. This is the strategy in play from the 49ers as they take a huge long-term bet. The Elland Road dwellers will hope to shrug off their recent relegation blues and continue working for securing promotion to the Premier League in the forthcoming season.

Whatever it takes to balance the finances

Premier League side Everton remain confident of securing the services of Wilfried Gnonto this summer.

According to an exclusive report by Football Insider, Leeds United are set to come to an agreement with Everton for the sale of Wilfried Gnonto in the next few days.

The Toffees are expected to send a bid of around £20 million soon and the amount will help The Whites make a profit as they attempt to balance their finances before investing in the market.

The 19-year-old is well respected despite his age in his home country but only Serie A side Napoli expressed a definite interest to sign him. However, the Partenopei need to raise money before embarking on signing a new player. This situation currently leaves Everton as the front-runner in the race to land Gnonto.

Coming on the back of recent relegation from the Premier League, Leeds United have a massive financial problem on their head as they could offload some of their players only on loan. Permanent sales are required to raise funds and balance the accounts.

Wilfried Gnonto joined the club in 2022 from FC Zurich for a fee of just under £4 million. A potential £20 million sale would mean a direct profit on the investment made as the player is increasing his worth day by day. Everton manager Sean Dyche hopes to see the young forward add versatility and effectiveness to his team’s attack for the new season.

The season ends in inevitable heartbreak...

It took just 91 seconds for Spurs to kill to hopeful Elland Road atmosphere, as he was found completely open in the penalty area to tuck away the killer goal to send Leeds United down.

But there were 88 minutes left to play, and in the span, The Whites struggled to trouble Fraser Forster between the Spurs sticks. Robin Koch had a huge chance go begging, having nodded Rodrigo’s fantastic cross from deep just wide of the post.

It took another 90 seconds after the restart, as Kane cruised toward goal before slipping Pedro Porro in on the right channel, whose finish all but confirmed relegation for the home side before any result elsewhere even needed to be considered.

Sam Alladryce’s first match ends in defeat...

Leeds United could not stop the rot at the Etihad in Sam Allardyce’s first game in charge, as Gungogan’s double was enough for the champions-elect.

It took 20 minutes for City to break the deadlock, as the City captain waited patiently on the edge of the box while Mahrez opened up room to cut the ball back to him. Once the ball arrived, Gundogan fired the ball into the bottom right corner with a perfect strike.

Seven minutes later, the home side made a carbon copy of their opening goal, only their captain found the Robles’ other corner, with the same result.

Leeds’ hanging on to just a two-goal deficit was partly down to Erling Haaland’s off-day in front of goal, as the record-breaking top-scorer missed a handful of good chances.

That said, the Whites’ did show some defensive improvements until Pascal Struijk came off the bench to concede a penalty kick. Gundogan had a chance to score his first career hat-trick but cracked the ball off the outside of the post with ten minutes to go.

Moments later, Leeds had some hope as Firpo’s flick-on was poorly cleared by Akanji, opening a path for Rodrigo to drive in on goal and slot the ball into the bottom left corner.

Another lacklustre performance from The Whites...

Leeds United just don’t seem to have it in them anymore, as they were comfortably beaten by Bournemouth on the south coast.

The home side took the lead after 20 minutes when Jefferson Lerma got on the end of Billing’s blocked shot, placing the ball perfectly into the top right corner.

Lerma grabbed his second just five minutes later when Meslier’s poor attempt to clear a corner fell straight to the Colombian at close range, who smashed the ball into the roof of the net.

Three straight defeats for United...

Leeds United followed up their horror of a week with another defeat, this time away at Craven Cottage.

The first half was pretty flat, but the match started to get going after the break, and before long, Fulham took the lead. Willian’s ball from the left could not be properly cleared by the hand of Meslier, and the ball dropped kindly to Wilson who smashed the ball off the underside of the crossbar.

Chants of “sack the board” and “Orta out” could be heard from the away end, and they got even louder once Fulham’s second hit the net. Another ball in from the left could not be dealt with by Meslier, whose effort to clear only reached as far as Pereira on the goal-line who could not possibly miss.

Further frustrations brought on by three poor corners by Marc Roca were relieved when Leeds recycled the ball from his fourth attempt, ending with Cooper firing the ball across, and Sinisterra’s attempt dropping for Bamford, whose effort deflected off Palhinha and past Leno between the sticks.

But it was too little, too late from Leeds, who were unable to create an opening thereafter.
